Washington DC is the capital of the United States Of America and was founded in 1790. Originally, the city of Washington was a separate municipality located within the Territory of Columbia. This was changed in 1871 when an act of Congress merged the city and the Territory of Columbia into one entity called the District of Columbia. This is why the city is known as Washington DC and not merely the District of Columbia, which is its legal title. This city covers an area of sixty-eight square miles and has a population of over a half a million residents.

Washington DC is the location of all three branches of the federal government of the United States, the legislative, the executive and the judicial. This city also contains over one hundred and seventy-four embassies and is the home to the headquarters of many institutions including the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Organization of American States and the Pan American Health Organization.

The city of Washington DC was formed out of the need of the federal government to have its own area of the country, separate from the states, to ensure its own security. In 1790, by order of the Residence Act, Washington DC was created.

Washington is a planned city designed by Pierre Charles L’Enfant who was commissioned by George Washington in 1791. His original plan included a stately capital decorated with large Baroque buildings, vast public parks and historic monuments. Instead, the city become overrun with slums, randomly place buildings and other eyesores by the late eighteenth century. This would be rectified by the McMillan Plan, which was an architectural plan for the city that was enacted in 1901 and provided much needed improvements to the city. These included the construction of new monuments, the clearing out of slums, landscape work done on the Capitol grounds and a new park system. Today the city is noted for its low skyline and a combination of architectural styles that include Georgian, Gothic, Neo-classic and modern styles. As a result, the city is often a popular attraction for both domestic and international tourist.

One of the most recognizable monuments in Washington DC is the Lincoln Memorial. This monument commemorates the life and presidency of the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. After his assassination, Congress formed the Lincoln Monument Association. This association was to plan the design and location of the monument, though a site for it wasn’t chosen until 1901.

It would take another years for President Taft to sign into law the Lincoln Memorial Bill which provided over two million dollars for the monuments construction. In 1914, construction started and was based on a design by architect Henry Bacon who modeled the monument in the style of a Greek temple. This monument has thirty-six Doric columns, each one representing one state in the Union at the time of his assassination. Since 12 new states had been added to the Union before it was completed, the names of these states were carved on the outside memorial’s walls. In 1922 the monument was finally completed. It stands ninety-nine feet high and has a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln seated in a chair and is nineteen feet high.

The Washington Monument is another readily recognizable symbol of the city. This obelisk shaped monument stands five hundred and fifty-five feet high and was completed in 1848. The monument opened to the public in October of 1888. Another famous monument, and one of the most photographed monuments in the world is the Jefferson Memorial. This monument was dedicated in 1943 and contains a nineteen foot high bronze statue of the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.

Another key fixture of the city is the White House.

This white painted building has been the official residence of every president except for George Washington. Construction of the building began in 1792 and John Adams moved into the residence in 1800. In 1814, British soldiers invaded the city and burned the White House down. All that was left were its outer walls, but the build was subsequently rebuilt.

Also located in Washington is Capitol Hill. This is the location where the legislative branches of the United States are housed. The Senate occupies its north wing and the House Of Representatives are in the south wing. This building is over seven hundred and fifty-one feet long and three hundred feet wide. The building has five floors and five hundred and forty rooms. Its prominent dome reaches a height of one hundred and eighty-eight feet. Washington DC is also home to the Library of Congress. This library was opened in 1897 and its design is modeled after the Paris Opera House. This library also features many classic Greek inspired designs and has over five hundred and forty miles of shelves containing over ninety million items.

Not far from the Library of Congress is the National Gallery of Art. The gallery was completed in 1941 and contains a large collection of pre-20th century European art, including Italian works, Dutch, Flemish, French and British collections.

Glasgow

Posted in Top Cities  by admin on October 17th, 2009

Glasgow is the third most populous city in the UK and the largest in Scotland. It covers an area of almost sixty-eight miles and has a population of six hundred thousand people. It is located on River Clyde, nestled in Scotland’s central lowlands. For thousands of years the area around Glasgow has been settled because of the excellent fishing conditions afforded by the river. However, the Romans were the first to build permanent settlements on the lowlands. The actual city was established by Saint Mungo during the sixth century.

By the twelfth century the city was incorporated and its cathedral was the seat of the Archbishops of Glasgow. The first stone cathedral was erected in 1136 and was later replaced by a bigger cathedral around the end of the twelfth century. In the fifteenth century the first organized center of higher education was established, the University of Glasgow. Within a hundred years the city became one of the most important academic and religious centers in all of Scotland.

The sixteenth century saw some of the most significant developments in Glasgow. The first development was that the cities artisan class began harnessing tremendous political power. The second development was that Glasgow turned into a major trading city with the Clyde River being the perfect instrument for transporting goods to the rest of Scotland. Its proximity to the Atlantic ocean also allowed American tobacco, sugar and cotton to be imported and then distributed to the rest of Europe. Glasgow’s economy was further bolstered by the large quantities of iron and coal in the area. This allowed the city to become a major industrial powerhouse with cotton mills and textile factories employing large quantities of people. During the latter years of the nineteenth century Glasgow became one of the wealthiest cities in the world and constructed a complex network of public transport, museums and parks.

Glasgow’s prosperity would come to an end during the Great Depression. Unemployment in the city rose and manufacturing started to decline. This was halted briefly during World War II, as the cities shipyards and manufacturing centers began to work at full capacity. But, this didn’t come without a price. German began an extensive bombing campaign on the city and caused a massive destruction of housing which displaced tens of thousands of Glaswegians. After the war, the cities industrial capacity continued to decline all the way up to the 1960s. During the Sixties radical changes began to take place in the city. This was started by Glasgow’s politicians taking steps to improve the city. The tenement slums were torn down and modern housing was erected in its place.

Today, Glasgow’s economy is based upon shipbuilding, engineering, publishing and textile production. The city is also becoming increasingly dependant on tourism. In fact, Glasgow is the second most popular destination in the entire country and is the fourth most popular in the United Kingdom. One of the most popular tourist attractions in the city is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was founded in 1901 and designed by the architect Sir John W. Simpson. It houses one of the most impressive collections of artwork in Europe. These include works from Dutch Renaissance painters, French Impressionists and Scottish Colourist.

Glasgow Cathedral is another tourist favorite in the city. Its called by a variety of different names which include High Kirk of Glasgow, St Mungo’s Cathedral and St Kentigern’s. It was built before the Reformation and served as the seat of the Archbishop of Glasgow. Another church located in the city is St. Mary’s Cathedral. St. Mary’s Cathedral was built in 1871 and is located in the west end of Glasgow. This cathedral rises one hundred and eighty nine feet and features a prominent central spire. St Luke’s Orthodox Cathedral is another church for visitors to take a look at in Glasgow. This church was built in 1877 and was designed by architect James Sellars. This church was designed in the classic Gothic style. Other churches in the city include St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Jordanhill Parish Church, Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church, St. John’s Renfield Church and Wellington Church.

The oldest public museum in Glasgow is the Hunterian Museum. This museum is spread out over several buildings on the campus of the University of Glasgow. This museum was opened in 1807 and its initial inventory was comprised of items bequeathed by William Hunter. Today its spread over four buildings which include the main museum, the Zoology Museum, Hunterian Gallery and Mackintosh House. The main museum has display which pertain to William Hunter and his collections.

Located on the southern bank of the Clyde River is the Glasgow Science Center. This science building is composed of three buildings which include an IMAX theater, Glasgow Tower and the Science Mall. The Science Mall is shaped like a crescent moon and is composed of titanium. It has three floors and over two hundred and fifty exhibits that have a hands on approach. It also contains a planetarium. The IMAX theater is the only theater of its kind to have been erected in the country. It can seat over three hundred and seventy people and the screen measure sixty by eighty feet. The Glasgow Tower is three hundred and eighty one feet high and is considered to be the tallest tower in the entire country of Scotland.

A popular place in Glasgow to view concerts is the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. It covers an area of over sixty-seven thousand square feet and has five exhibition halls. It was opened in 1979.

The city of Glasgow is also filled with lots of interesting restaurants, bars, pubs, cafes and shops littered all over the city. If your looking for lodging in the city there are also plenty to choose from. There are hotels, hostels, bed and breakfast and many other places to stay. No matter if its a night, weekend or week.

Atlantic City

Posted in Top Cities  by admin on October 9th, 2009

Atlantic City is a city that is known for its beaches, spectacular scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean and its casinos. The city is also known for its many shopping centers and its boardwalk. This city is located in Atlantic County, New Jersey and served as the inspiration for the popular board game Monopoly. Atlantic City covers an area of seventeen square miles and has a population of over thirty-five thousand residents.

Atlantic City was incorporated in 1854 and since its inception has been a resort city. During the year of its incorporation, rail lines were established linking Atlantic City with the city of Philadelphia. Because of the relative short distance to the huge urban center of Philadelphia, the city became a popular destination for tourists. In 1870, the city built its first boardwalk along a stretch of beach. It was built to assist the hotels in keeping sand out of their lobbies. This idea spread like a wild fire, and the boardwalk was extended and changed several times over the course of the next few years. Up until 1944, it was about seven miles long and extended up to Longport. Then the area was hit by a major hurricane. Now, the boardwalk is about four mile long and sixty feet wide. The boardwalk has also be fortified with concrete and steel.

In 1882, the first amusement pier in the world was built in Atlantic City and it was named Ocean Pier. This was followed by Steel Pier in 1898, Million Dollar Pier in 1906 and the Garden Pier. Garden Pier was destroyed during the hurricane of 1944. During the first half of the twentieth century, Atlantic City experienced a period of rapid and extended development. Though it was once populated with boarding houses, the city started seeing the building of large luxury hotels. It was during this time that two of the most well known hotels were built, the Traymore Hotel and the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel.

The Traymore Hotel was situated on the boardwalk and Illinois Avenue, and was started in 1879 as a modest boarding house. It would remain a boarding house until 1914, when it was transformed into a sixteen story, tan brick hotel that would be known around the world. In 1903, the Marlborough House Hotel was built. Immediately, the hotel was a success, and the owner decided to expand it. He started a new hotel that was adjacent to the Marlborough House Hotel. In order to give the hotel a unique look, he hired the architects of Price and McLanahan. This architectural company used reinforced concrete and designed the hotel in a distinctive blend of Spanish and Moorish architectural styles. The owner named the new structure the Blenheim and combined the two hotels into one. It would then become known as the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel. These hotels were such a success that additional hotels started popping up. These included the Breakers, Brighton, Ambassador, Madison House, Chelsea, Ritz Carlton, The Mayflower, Haddon House, Chalfonte House and the Shelburne. Other hotels that opened in the city during the early twentieth century include the Chalfonte Hotel, The Claridge and Haddon Hall.

After World War II, Atlantic City began to decline. It was plagued by crime, poverty and the loss of its middle class. This decline was caused by a number of factors. During its early history, the city got most of its visitors via the rail lines. The widespread use of the automobile caused a decline in rail travel and also enabled people to reach other destinations easily. As a result, visitors who used to spend a couple weeks in the city, now only spent a couple of days. Another factor that contributed to its decline was the growing middle class. As people were more able to afford swimming pools air conditioning, the allure of the beaches and its luxury hotels lost its appeal.

By the 1960s, many of the grand hotels of the city had either closed their doors, or had been converted into apartment housing. During the 1970s and 1980s, many prominent hotels were closed and demolished. These included the Marlborough Blenheim, the Mayflower, the Breakers, the Traymore, the Chelsea, the Shelburne and the Brighton. Not all hotels closed down, however. Smaller hotels and some of the large hotels like the the Dennis, the Ritz Carlton and Haddon Hall. The Ambassador Hotel was remodeled and eventually became the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. In 1976, the city began an effort to bring the city back into prosperity. Voters approved casino gambling for the city and the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel was converted into the first legal casino in the eastern part of the United States. Soon, other casinos added along the boardwalk and attracted visitors from around the country.

But, Atlantic City has more than its boardwalk, hotels and casinos. There are a variety of other attractions in the city as well. A popular attraction in Atlantic City is Absecon Light House. Absecon Light House is situated on the coast of the northern end of the city and overlooks Absecon Inlet. It was built in 1857 and is the second tallest light house in the state and the third largest in the United States. Though it was officially deactivated as a navigational aid in 1933, the light still is lit every night. Located in the light house is a museum that contains exhibits pertaining to local memorabilia, ocean life, light house history and shipwrecks. Visitors can also walk the two hundred and twenty-eight stairs to the top of the light house for a fantastic view.

Other attractions in Atlantic City include Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium, Cabana & C5, Atlantic City Aquarium, Wild Wild West Casino, Resorts Atlantic City Casino, Harrah’s Atlantic City Casino, Atlantic City Historical Museum, Central Pier, Ventnor Pier, Atlantic City Art Center, Immersion Spa, Trump Taj Mahal Casino, Caesars Atlantic City Casino, Marriott’s Seaview Resort Golf Course, Borgata Casino, Sandcastle Baseball Stadium, Atlantic City Convention Center, Great Bay Resort and Country Club and the Trump Marina Casino.
