Located in Southern France, Nice is a city situated on the Mediterranean between Marseille and Genoa. This city covers a land area of over twenty-seven square miles and has a population of about three hundred and fifty thousand people. Not only is Nice a major worldwide tourist attraction, but is also the prime resort of the French Riviera, which is itself a very popular attraction for travelers from all over the globe.

The area of Nice hosted one of the earliest human settlements in history. Excavations here has shown evidence of house construction that goes back almost four hundred thousand years. The official boundaries of the city were probably established around 350 B.C. by the Marseille who originally hailed from Greece. At that time it was named Nikaia, which is a word that gives honour to the Greek goddess Nike. The city would go on to become a busy trading port, one that had few equals in the ancient world.

Around the seventh century, this city had joined the Genoese League of Liguria. A century later the city would be attacked by the Saracens, but the city would repulse the invaders.

However, the Saracens would make two more attacks upon the city during the ninth century. Both of these attacks would result in the city being pillaged and burned. Nice would quickly recover from both of these attacks and move on to become a major military force up until the tenth century.

The Middle Ages once again brought war to the forefront in the city and they participated in many conflicts, which included wars in Italy. Because of Nice’s alliance with Pisa, it was the bitter enemy of Genoa, a situation that the King of France fruitlessly tried to remedy. Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Nice fell into the hands of the Counts of Provence and turned to Savoy for protection. In 1561 the Duke of Savoy, Emmanuel Philibert, abolished Latin as the language of the city and established Italian in its place. In 1860, Nice was ceded to France as a reward for the French assistance in the Second Italian War of Independence against Austria.

The city of Nice has a typical Mediterranean climate. Most of the year is characterized by moderate rainfall and mild temperatures. Summers are generally dry and hot and rainfall can become quite scarce.

Dresden

Posted in Top Cities  by admin on May 28th, 2008

Dresden is the capital of Saxony, German and is located in a valley on the Elbe River. This city covers an area of one hundred and twenty-seven square miles and has a population in excess of half a million people. This city once had the recognition of being a World Heritage Site, but lost that status in 2009, when the city constructed a highway bridge across the Elbe River valley, less than a mile of its historic center. It now has the distinction of being the only European city to have it World Heritage status revoked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Dresden can trace its historical roots to a Slavic colony known as Drezdany in the twelfth century. From the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, the city of Dresden was the seat of the Dukes of Saxony.

Today, Dresden has a very dynamic economy that is based on three sectors, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and mechanical engineering. The Gross Domestic Product per capita is just over thirty-one thousand Euros and the city is currently experiencing a period of high unemployment, which is about thirteen percent as of 2009. Despite these difficulties, Dresden’s economy is among the top ten cities in Germany, due in part to its versatile and dynamic nature. Dresden is also known for its top notch educational facilities and research centers. Top universities in the city include the Technische Universitat, Hochschule fur Technik und Wirtschaft and the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste. Research institutes in the city include the Max Planck Society, Fraunhofer Society and the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft. The city is also home to the Palucca School of Dance and the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music.

Dresden is a city that has a wide range of attractions located both within its city limits and in the surrounding area. The city has over three hundred fountains and springs located all over the city, especially in its public squares and parks. The city also has quite a few theaters and cinemas. These venues come alive during the Dresden Film Fest, which is a competition for short films. One of the most prominent attractions in Dresden is the Zwinger Palace. Zwinger Palace was designed by Matthaus Daniel Poppelmann and erected in the eighteenth century. The most easily recognizable feature of Zwinger Palace is the Baroque style gate topped with a crown called the Kronentor or Crown Gate. Inside the niches of the gate are statues which represent the four seasons. Also located here is the Nymphenbad Courtyard. The Nymphenbad contains a Baroque fountain that features many statues of tritons and water nymphs. Zwinger Palace is home to several buildings which include the Porzellansammlung, Rampart Pavilion, the Theaterplatz, Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister and the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon.

The Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister contains an impressive collection of art history. It contains a collection of Renaissance, Dutch and Flemish paintings from the seventeenth century, and contains over seven hundred works of art. Prominent artists in the collection include Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, Tiziano Vecellio, Bernardino di Betto, Bernardo Bellotto, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonis van Dyck, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Jacob Jordaens, Johannes Vermeer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Hans Holbein the Younger, Jean-Etienne Liotard, Nicolas Poussin and Francisco de Zurbaran. The Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon is a museum that has an extensive collection of over two thousand mechanical objects and clocks. This museum was founded in the sixteenth century.

Semperoper (or Semper Opera House) is an opera house that was built in 1841 by architect Gottfried Semper. This beautiful Baroque opera house has seen many performers and operas during its one hundred and seventy year history. Operas that have played here include Rienzi, Daphne, Massimilla Doni, Tannhauser, Der Rosenkavalier, Die agyptische Helena, The Flying Dutchman, Der Protagonist, Mr Wu, Spiel oder Ernst and Vom Fischer and syner Fru.

Dresdner Frauenkirche is a lutheran church that was originally built in the eighteenth century. It was extensively bombed during World War II, and was effectively nothing more than a pile of rubble. But, massive restoration efforts have revitalized and returned this church to its former glory. Since its restoration, the Frauenkirche has been immensely popular among tourist. In the first four years since it was reopened to the public, this church has been visited by over seven million people. Another religious structure located in Dresden is the Hofkirche. This cathedral was built in the mid-eighteenth century in a Baroque architectural style. Though this cathedral was severely damaged during the bombings of Dresden in World War II, the cathedral has since been rebuilt and Meissen’s Bishop Seat was moved to the cathedral.

Another fine attraction in the city is the Royal Palace or Residenzschloss. This palace was built in the sixteenth century to serve as a residence of the Wettin Family by the Duke of Saxony, George the Bearded. As with most of Dresden’s historical landmarks, the Royal Palace was laid in ruins by Allied bombing efforts during World War II. Reconstruction on it began in 1989, however, and the Royal Palace is now a popular tourist attraction. Key parts of the Royal Palace include the Georgenbau and the Green Vault, also known as Grunes Gewolbe in German. The Green Vault is a museum that contains a virtual treasure trove of European art and other treasures. The museum is divided into nine rooms. These rooms are the Vorgewolbe, Bernsteinkabinett, Elfenbeinzimmer, Weibsilberzimmer, Silbervergoldete Zimmer, Pretiosensaal, Wappenzimmer, Juwelenzimmer, Bronzezimmer and the Raum der Renaissancebronzen. Treasures located here include the Mohr mit Smaragdstufe Statue, a forty-one carat green diamond called the Dresden Green Diamond, the Obeliscus Augustalis and the Juwelen-Garnituren.

Other attractions in the city of Dresden include the Goldener Reiter, Neues Rathaus, Bruhl Terrace, Albertinum, Semper memorial, Royal Art Academy, Secundogenitur, Elbe Valley, Yenidze, the New Synagogue, Blue Wonder, Glockenspielpavilion and the Procession of Princes (Furstenzug). Dresden is also home to a wide range of hotels and restaurants. Prominent hotels in the city include the The Westin Bellevue, Maritim Hotel Dresden, Hilton Dresden, Aparthotels An der Frauenkirche and the Kempinski Grand Hotel Taschenbergpalais.

Detroit is a city that is located in Wayne County in the state of Michigan. It is the biggest city in Michigan and covers an are of one hundred and forty-three square miles with a population in excess of nine hundred and twelve thousand residents. The city can trace its roots back to the eighteenth century, when a French officer named Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded a settlement named Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit. France bolstered the population of the settlement by offering free land to French families willing to relocate to the area. By 1765, the population of the settlement had increased to over eight hundred families.

In 1760, during the French and Indian War, the British seized the settlement and shortened the name to Detroit. Under the terms of theTreaty of London of 1794, Detroit became a possession of the United States. Eleven years later a huge fire swept through the settlement and destroyed most of it. A warehouse located on the river was the only structure to survive.

A favorite among many visitors to London is St. Mary’s Cathedral. This impressive church was originally built in 604 AD. It only stood for seventy-one years before it burned down in 675. It was then promptly rebuilt but was once again burned down in the infamous Great Fire Of London in 1666 AD. The most magnificent feature of this Cathedral is it’s huge dome.
