Suzhou is a city located on the Yangtze River, off the banks of Lake Taihu in the province of Jiangsu, China. It covers a land area of three thousand square miles and has a population of over six million people. This city is known for its expansive gardens, beautiful pagodas and historical landmarks that span over two thousand years of its rich history. Suzhou is a city that has a history that spans over twenty five hundred years to the late Shang Dynasty. The original inhabitants were tribes known as the “Gou Wu”. By the year 212 BC the city was known by the name Wu County, but by 589 the name was changed to Suzhou. During the Sui Dynasty, the Grand Canal was fully operational and the city became a major trade route. During this time it prospered as a trade city, a period that lasted until the twelveth century when the city was devastated by two separate invasions, the Jin invasion of 1130 and the Mongolian invasion of 1275. Around the fourteenth century, Zhang Shicheng claimed the city as his capital. But, the city would only remain in Zhang’s hands until 1367 when it was seiged for almost a year, and subsequently taken, by his arch rival Zhu Yuanzhang. This ancient gate is believed to have been built twenty five hundred years ago during the Warring States Period. Today, a variety of Croatian languages are spoken in Dubrovnik, as well as Italian. The transportation needs of the city are serviced by a modern bus system and an international airport, which is located in the city. According to local legend Dubrovnik, originally known as Ragusa, was established in the seventh century on an island called Laus. But, recent archeaological digs are beginning to unearth evidence that contradicts this theory. According to the new evidence, major construction on the city was done in ancient times, most likely a thousand years prior. Archeaologist believe that the city was founded by Greek sailors. This theory has gained popularity over the last few years for a variety of reasons. The main reason is the the city is located between the Greek settlements of Korcula and Budva. Greek ships at the time could only travel about fifty nautical miles a day, requiring a place for the ships to set anchor. Dubrovnik is approximately this distance between the two Greek settlements, and with its abundant source of fresh water and sandy shores, it would have been the perfect place to dock. Regardless of which theory is advocated, one thing is for sure. Later history of the city is well documented. When the Ostrogothic Kingdom fell, Dubrovnik came under the rule of the Byzantines. After the end of the Crusades, the city became a sovereignty of Venice. Later in the fourteenth century, it became a part of the Hungarian Kingdom. During the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, the city would become an independent state. In the nineteenth century, it fell under the rule of the Austrian Kingdom, a status it would keep until 1918 when the Austrian-Hungary Kingdom collapsed. It was then handed over to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (known at the time as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes). During the 1990s, Croatia and Slovenia declared their independence and the name of the Socialist Republic of Croatia was changed to the Republic of Croatia.
Today, Dubrovnik has many historical attractions and cultural events that appeal to tourist from all over the world. Every year the city holds the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
