Guangzhou

Posted in Top Cities  by admin on December 30th, 2007

Guangzhou is located on the Pearl River and is about seventy-five miles north of Hong Kong. This is a sub provincial city that is divided into ten administrative districts and boast a population of over six million people. It is also a city that is one of the main manufacturing centers in all of China. It has also recently developed a boom in tourism, causing a rise in the number of tourist oriented restaurants, shops and hotels.

Founded in 214 B.C and originally known by the name Panyu, Guangzhou was the provincial capital of the Han Dynasty, a distinction it retains to this day. Over time the citizens began calling Panyu Guangzhou and by 226 A.D. the name became official. It remained an unremarkable city until China seized control of Taiwan in 1683. As a result, it was found that Guangzhou was in a very strategic location to operate as a trade hub between Western countries and China. It continued to grow at an exponential rate until the eighteenth century when it was considered as one of the world’s greatest trade ports.

While Guangzhou is an important economic and cultural hub of China, it doesn’t have the nearly the amount of historical and cultural attractions as Chinese cities such as Xian and Beijing. However, what it does offer cannot be compared to any other city in Asia. This city does have some of the most significant cultural monuments to be found in mainland China.

One of the grandest palaces in all of China is the Bright Filial Piety Temple. This temple is located at the northern end of Guangxiao Road and has a history that dates over seventeen hundred years. It was built during the Han Dynasty and served as both a private residence and lecture hall before fulfilling its destiny as a Zen Buddhist Temple. This temple consists of seven prominent features. These include parts of the complex known as Mahakaruna Dharani Sutra Pillar, Mahavira Hall, Sixth Ancestor Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Samgharama Hall , and the East and West Towers Of Iron.

Each of the features of the temple were built at different times during its history and has significant cultural value. Take Mahavira Hall for instance. This was built in the fifth century during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Today it stands over one hundred and sixteen feet high and is eighty feet long. Inside are three statues of Buddha. Its architectural style has since been copied by temples all over China that were later built. The Liuzudian, otherwise known as the Sixth Ancestor Hall, was built during the Northern Song Dynasty. Inside can be found the statue of Master Hui Neng, for whom the structure was dedicated to. Behind this hall grows a Bodhi tree, which symbolizes wisdom. The East and West Iron Towers are the some of the oldest metal towers in all of mainland China. The West Iron Tower was erected in 963 and the East Tower was erected in 967. There are around one thousand shrines, each one compleat with a Buddha statue, are carved into the outside of the tower. It is believed that at the time it was built, the exterior of the tower was covered in gold leaf. Other structures on the temple grounds of this site include the Heavenly Hall, the Dharani Pillar and the Spring of Washing Bowl.

One of the oldest parks in Guangzhou is Yuexiu Park. This park covers an area of two hundred and twelve acres and is made up of a combination of the peaks of Yuexiu Mountain and three man made lakes. Inside the park is one of Guzngzhou most famous sculptures, the Five Ram Sculpture. It tells the ancient legend of how five immortals came into the city mounted on five rams. The immortals then left sheaves of rice for the residents of Guangzhou, who at the time were battling against famine and poverty. According to the legend, the rams then turned into stone and the city was transformed into a thriving city. Other prominent sites located within this park is Zhenhai Tower ( a green and red glazed tower that stands over ninety feet high), the Square Cannon Site and the site of the Ming Dynasty City Wall. An interesting note is that the three lakes of Yuexiu; the Dongxiu, Nanxiu, and Beixiu cover an area of over five hundred thousand square feet.

The Pearl River is another site in Guangzhou that is worth a visit. This river has a length of more than twelve hundred miles. That makes it Chinas third largest river. Many visitors opt to take a night tour of this river because of the beautiful skyline that can be witnessed here. There are also ten bridges in the city which span the river and are lit up with neon lights at night. The dark waters capture and reflect the lights from the city and make for quite an impressive sight. Along the banks of the river many historical sights can be visited. These include China’s first military academy, Huangpu Military Academy and Xinghai Concert Hall.

Another treasure of Guangzhou is White Cloud Mountain. This mountain gets its name from the veil of clouds that always seems to be covering its peak. White Cloud Mountain covers an area of ten square miles and has over thirty peaks. This mountain is the ideal place for a picnic or simply to enjoy the majestic beauty of nature. This mountain has different sections that are all equally popular with visitors. These include Bright Pearl Building Park, Luhu Park, Fei’eling Park, San tailing Summit Park, Yuntai Garden and Bird Spring Valley Park.

Other popular attractions in Guangzhou include the Huaisheng Mosque, Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family, Chimelong Holiday Resort, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Temple of the Six Banyan Trees and Western Han Nanyue King’s Tomb Museum. The city is also full of street vendors, cafes, restaurants and stands dedicated to the sale of trinkets to tourist. Not to mention a thriving shopping district.

Williamsburg

Williamsburg is an American city that is located in the Hampton Roads Metro area of Virginia. It covers an area of nine square miles and has a population of about twelve thousand people. The main economic activity of the city is tourism. It draws such a large volume of visitors that it has attracted businesses such as Anheuser Busch to the area. AB opened a large brewery just outside the city and also two theme parks Water Country USA and Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

Williamsburg can trace its history to the seventeenth century. This is when British settlements began to occuppy the lower portion of Virginia. These colonies built a stockade across the peninsula to protect themselves from Indian attacks. It was on this peninsula that Williamsburg was established. When Jamestown was burned down in an accidental fire, the colonial government was relocated to what would become Williamsburg. In 1699, it was organized into a village and was named in honor of King William III of England. In 1771, Virgina’s Royal Governor started a project to connect Archer’s Creek with Queen’s Creek. It was intended to be a water bridge across the Virginia Peninsula, but was never completed. This was the first canal constructed in the United States. Williamsburg was also the location of the first psychiatric hospital constructed in the United States. This hospital would later be known as Eastern State Hospital and was built in 1770.

During the American Revolution, the capital of Virginia was moved from Williamsburg to Richmond. This was done by request of Virginia governor Thomas Jefferson, who feared that Williamsburg’s location made it an easy target for attack by the British. During the Civil War, Confederate troops defended the city against the Union during the Peninsula Campaign. After holding the Union forces off for over a year, in 1862 the Confederates withdrew from the city and it fell into Union Hands. During the 1880s, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad built lines through the area. This allowed for more passenger travel and also for improved shipping of products from local farmers to their markets.

A prominent attraction in the city today, is Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Though this theme park is not directly located in the city limits (its actually three mile southeast), a lot of people still come to the city to visit this attraction. Busch Gardens Williamsburg opened its doors to the public in May of 1975 and is next to the Anheuser-Busch brewery and the Kingsmill Resort complex. Originally it was named Busch Gardens: The Old Country but was changed to Busch Gardens Williamsburg during the 1990s. Since this park is themed around a European theme, it was officially referred to as Busch Garden Europe as of 2006. Currently, the name is being reverted back to Busch Gardens Williamsburg. The theme park is divided into ten areas that are referred to as hamlets. These hamlets are themed after six European countries. The hamlets are Banbury Cross (England), Killarney (Ireland), Heatherdowns (Scotland), Festa Italia (Italy), San Marco (Italy), Oktoberfest (Bavarian Germany), Rhinefeld (Rhineland Germany), New France (French Canada) and Aquitaine (France). Animal attractions in the park include Jack Hanna’s Wild Reserve and The Clydesdales. Jack Hanna’s Wild Reserve is a three thousand square foot area that is used for rehabilitating and housing bald eagles. It also educates the public about these birds. A subsection of this area is Wolf Haven, where guest can look at the pair of wolves that are in the collection. The park also has a Gondola Skylift and a replica steam train. There are also several roller coasters in the park which include the Griffon, Loch Ness Monster, Grover’s Alpine Express, Apollo’s Chariot and Alpengeist.

Another attraction in Williamsburg is Water Country USA. Water Country USA is a water park that is a few miles from Busch Gardens Williamsburg. It has a 1950s surg theme and contains shops, restaurants, live entertainment and water rides. Key features of this park include Cow-A-Bunga (children’s water playland), Adventure Isle (an inner tube attraction), H20-UFO (slides and fountains) and Kritter Korral (miniature slides for small children). Rides in the park include Aquazoid, Hubba-Hubba Highway, Juke Box Tower, Jet Scream, Big Daddy Falls, Malibu Pipeline, Little Bopper, Nitro Racer, Meltdown, Wild Thang, Surfer’s Bay and Rampage. Muscarelle Museum of Art is another popular attraction in the city. Its located on Jamestown Road and is next to Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. It first opened its doors in 1883. This museum contains more than four thousand works of art. Items in its collection include American and European prints from the sixteenth century on, African art, Japanese prints and Asian ceramics. Current exhibitions here include “Deeply Superficial: Andy Warhol’s Voyeurism”, “Pursuing Perfection: Highlights & Select Loans from the Museum Collection” and “Nat Finkelstein: Factory Photography On View at the Sadler Center”.

Williamsburg Pottery Factory is an often looked attraction in the city, but is one worth making the time for. The city claims this retail outlet is the largest tourist attraction in Virginia. It sits on two hundred acres and has handmade articles and imported goods from over twenty countries. It was started in 1938 by James E. Maloney, who was looking to sell his eighteenth century saltglaze reproductions. As time went by, he added glassware and china. Eventually, it expanded to include items such as handmade lamps, cheeses, floral arrangements and baskets. Berlin is the capital and the largest city in Germany. It covers an area of three hundred and forty-four square miles and has a population of over five million people. Its located in northeastern Germany about forty miles west of Poland. This city is home to world renowned universities, museums and research institutes. It is also home to a diverse collection of restaurants, markets, shopping venues and some of the finest hotels in Europe. It also has an ever changing face that is constantly being renovated, expanded and rebuilt.

The area which is now known as Berlin has been settled since the twelfth century. The city was founded in 1237. The city saw little growth until the nineteenth century when rapid economic growth was fueled by the industrial revolution. This lead to not only an explosion in population but also marked a steady increase of manufacturing facilities. This growth continued until 1933 when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party ascended to power.

The Nazi’s first official act was to totally obliterate the cities Jewish community.

Thousands of German Jews were either interned at the nearby Sachsenhausen concentration camp or shipped to the Auschwitz concentration camp. During World War II, huge sections of Berlin were left in total ruins during the air raids that raged between 1943 to 1945. After the end of the war in Europe in 1945, Berlin received huge numbers of refugees from many of the provinces to the east. The Allies divided the city into four distinct sections. The sections of the Western Allies formed West Berlin, while the Soviet sector formed what was known as East Berlin. Political tensions began to arise between the United States and the Soviet Union, which culminated in the erection of the Berlin Wall. Eventually, pressure from the population of East Germany resulted in the demolition of the wall in 1989.

Today, the city of Berlin has a unique array of architectural styles that allude to the different phases of its recent history. The eastern portion of the city still has many remnants left over from the Soviet occupation and many parts of the city are testaments to the massive rebuilding program that was initiated to revive the ruined city after World War II.

One of the more popular attractions in the city is the Reichstag.

Berlin

This was the seat of German Parliamentary power and was built in 1894. It was built in the Neo-Renaissance style and four hundred and fifty feet long and three hundred and eighteen feet wide. In 1916 the famous inscription “Dem Deutschen Volke” was added to the front of the building. It translates into English as “To The German People”. In 1999 a glass dome was added to the top of the building to replace the one that was damaged during the war.

Another popular attraction is Brandenburger Tor, otherwise known as Brandenburger Gate. It was built in 1791 by Carl Gotthard. It is topped with the Quadriga of Victory. This feature was taken to France by Napoleon during France’s occupation of Germany is 1806, but was subsequently returned to Germany after the Battle Of Waterloo.

Also in Berlin is one of Germany’s biggest palaces, the Charlottenburg Palace. It was built in 1699 and was originally intended to be the summer home for the wife of Frederick III. This building suffered severe damage during the Allied bombings of Berlin, but was eventually restored back to its former glory.

Some of the features of Charlottenburg Palace include the eighteenth century art gallery called the Eichengallerie. Other features include a small chapel called Schlosskapelle, as well as other art galleries which include Goldene Galerie and the Galerie der Romantik.

An art gallery containing some of the greatest works of the region is the Alte Nationalgalerie, or Old National Gallery. This gallery was completed in 1876, but many of the priceless works of art that were contained here were either destroyed by the Nazis or the Allied bombings. Some of the works that escaped being destroyed have since made their way back to the museum and it opened its doors to the public in 2001. Today, this museum has the largest collected works of Adolph von Menzel, as well as an extensive collection of nineteenth century sculptures.

One of the gems of the section of Berlin known as Museum Island is the Altes Museum. Built in 1830, this museum was one of the first of its kind in the city. The front of this museum is graced by eighteen columns and the building encloses a rotunda and two courtyards. Unfortunately, the museum was completely destroyed during World War II. The museum has since been restored and it reopened its doors in 1966.

Visitors to this museum can see a huge collection of works by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. One of the centerpieces of its collection is the bust of Queen Nefertiti, which dates back to 1360 B.C

One of the most famous places in Berlin is the Bebelplatz. This square was originally designed to house an opera house, palace and academy. Its features include the Staatsoper, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral and the library named Alte Bibliothek. But, this site is best known for the Nazi minister of Propaganda organizing a book burning where more then twenty thousand books were burned in 1933.

A haunting reminder of the darkest period in Germany history can be seen at the Denkmal fur die ermordeten Juden Europas, or Holocaust Memorial. This monument is located near Brandenburg Gate and covers an area of two hundred square feet. The monument has no name inscribed on it but is merely made up of twenty seven hundred stone slabs. Visitors may visit this memorial anytime during the day or evening. At the base of the memorial is an information center that chronicles the history of the holocaust. While the memorial is open twenty four hours a day, the information center is only open between 10 am to 8 pm.

Located on the Tiber river, Rome the capital city of Italy is home to almost four million residents. This is a city that is a brilliant blend of the modern and the ancient. The history of Rome can be traced back two millenium and is considered to be one of the founding cities of Western civilization.According to legend, the city of Rome was founded by two brothers, Romulus and Remus who were sons of the god Mars and his lover Rea Silvia. Romulus grew up to become the first king of Rome in 753 BC after slaying his brother Remus over a land dispute.

In 27 BC., Rome switched from a monarchy style government into a Republic that was ruled by its Senate. During this time Roman rule increased exponentially and its control became absolute over most of Europe, as well as a large part of the Mediterranean. Rome thus became the richest, most politically influential and largest city in the entire Western world.

Around 476 AD, Rome collapsed, partly due in part to the constant barbarian invasions of the Goths and Gauls and partly because of the empire’s excesses. In the year 756, Pepin the Short gave the Catholic church temporary jurisdiction over Rome, thus creating the papal states.

Today, Rome is not only the official seat of the Catholic church but it is also the seat of the Italian government.
